Xi comes to America, Something feels strange
It was a little odd to watch many of our leaders genuflect to President Xi when he flew into San Francisco. The whole thing had a very strange vibe.
By the way does anyone remember this?
Don’t get us wrong, we think that China and the United States should always talk. There is too much at stake for us not to talk. But the communist Chinese flags flapping in the wind along the streets of San Francisco is something.
And Gavin Newsom grinning away on the flight line as he greeted Xi was also a bit much. Granted, one should be cordial in these instances.
For instance there are pictures of Eisenhower and even Kennedy greeting Kruschev warmly. And let’s not forget Reagan and Gorbachev. There were smiles in those meetings too.
But. But…The initial feeling one gets from the images spreading out through social media is almost of Xi taking some kind of weird victory lap. A victory over what is unclear, but it feels like he thinks that it is a victory lap.
That so much of the political class is so tied in with Chinese business, businesses that fundamentally must answer to the Chinese Communist Party rubs us the wrong way. That so much the Californian political class has been allegedly compromised by Chinese agents is also of concern to us.
A Chinese spy literally worked at the highest levels for 20 years for Senator Feinstein, who was the Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee when the spy was exposed.
Or what about Congressman Swalwell and his connection to alleged Chinese spy Christine Fang. (Though investigators chose not to officially penalize Swalwell, he was removed from the House Intel Committee).
California has garnered particular attention from the Chinese.
