Was Trump a glitch in the power structure?, Did he derail the "trans-Atlantic" establishment?
Bret Weinstein explores this
Bret Weinstein is a pretty interesting guy. He’s a professor of evolutionary biology and was on the faculty at (the hyper-woke) Evergreen State for fifteen years. He is a champion of free speech and lost his job at Evergreen largely because of this. He apparently still considers himself a “man of the left” but he is similar to people like Matt Taibbi, Michael Shellenberger, Naomi Wolf, Russell Brand, and Joe Rogan in that in the wake of the anti-liberalism of the woke “movement” and in the wake of the authoritarian response to Covid, he has charted a new path.
We have heard Prof. Weinstein speak on many subjects but we recently heard some particularly good analysis from him on Trump and the Trump phenomena.
He makes the point that Trump essentially upended the official power structure/narrative which is supposed to be pushed by heads of state who are essentially vetted by the powers that be. He has argued that the real reason so many people (in positions of power) particularly loathe Trump is because Trump represents populism welling up for all to see, when the system was supposed to suppress such sentiment. Weinstein argues that the current political system was designed to give the illusion of choice, the illusion of democracy.
This is in many respects correct. The truth is the establishment expected a Jeb Bush/Hillary Clinton match up in 2016, which would have been of little consequence either way to the power structure. But when Trump came in and “usurped” the presidency this crowd was shocked. Then they went to work making sure Trump didn’t do too much damage to their interests, politically or economically.
