There was a time when calling oneself a “socialist” in this country was like calling oneself a “Nazi” (which makes sense we suppose since Nazis are National Socialists). There was shame in the term. Socialism meant oppression. Socialism meant party control. Socialism meant a lack of property rights. Socialism meant authoritarianism (socialism is by definition authoritarian, restricting economic liberty is to restrict liberty). Socialism meant 1984. Socialism meant Stalin. Los Angeles is run by a socialist with ties to Cuba and anti-American groups. In Chicago the city is headed by a socialist who is more keen on reparations for his voter base than in solving Chicago’s basket-case economics. And now in New York city Democrats have voted for Zohran Mamdani, a 33 year old fringe leftist who is advocating for state run grocery stores and even nuttier ideas.
